Analytical Problem Solving

Alamo's Analytical Problem Solving (APS) workshop is designed specifically for individuals who are responsible for solving problems in a manufacturing or technical arena. The program provides the troubleshooter with advanced skills in root cause analysis and problem prevention. Through practical instruction and hands-on application, participants learn how to focus their efforts on the sources of problems and avoid them altogether. They learn how to apply the Cause Analysis and Problem Prevention processes to both routine and major problems, so the techniques can be useful every day.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Gather relevant information on problems through specific, focused questioning
  • Pinpoint root causes using facts, instead of guesswork or opinion
  • Avoid costly experiments and trial fixes by logically testing possible causes
  • Identify the areas of an operation or process where problems could cause the most difficulty
  • Target potential problems in advance and develop actions to prevent them

Outline

APS is presented in two modules: Root Cause Analysis and Plan Analysis.

Root Cause Analysis - A deductive approach that enables a team or individual to find causes through factual analysis rather than brainstorming. Steps include:

  • State the Problem or Opportunity
  • Describe the Facts: What? Who? Where? When? How Much?
  • Identify Unique Features and Events
  • Generate and Test Likely Causes
  • Select Most Likely Cause's

Plan Analysis – A process that helps to maximize success, by identifying necessary actions in advance that can prevent problems and limit damage if they do occur. The process also addresses the up-side potential of a plan or project, enabling participants to identify and capitalize on possible opportunities. Steps include:

  • Focus on the specific objective of the plan/project
  • Define necessary tasks, responsibilities, and timing
  • Identify potential problems and opportunities
  • Develop actions for timely response to the problems and opportunities

Audience

APS is appropriate for executives, managers, professional, improvement team members, and other key individual contributors. The program is most effective if small intact teams are available to work together on real world issues.
